What "self-contained" actually means
A self-contained certified vehicle carries the fresh water, grey water and toilet capacity to support its occupants for at least three days without external services. It's a legal certification (blue sticker in the window) inspected to the NZS 5465 standard — and it's what lets you park overnight in NZ's freedom-camping spots that ban non-self-contained vans.
