The Best Campervan Road Trips in New Zealand
Routes we send buyers on all year round — real distances, real drive times, and the freedom-camping stops that make each loop work. No inflated highlight reels.
1. North Island — the Auckland loop (5–7 days)
Auckland → Coromandel (Hot Water Beach, Cathedral Cove) → Tauranga → Rotorua (Redwoods, Wai-O-Tapu) → Taupo (lake, Huka Falls) → Waitomo caves → Auckland. Around 900 km. Good freedom camping at Whangapoua and around Lake Taupo. Fits comfortably in a smaller or mid-size van.
2. Cape Reinha & the Far North (5 days)
Auckland → Whangarei → Bay of Islands → Ahipara → Cape Reinga → Ninety Mile Beach → Kaitaia → Auckland. About 1,000 km. Warm year-round, empty beaches, and some of the best DOC campsites in the country (Puketi, Rarawa).
3. South Island — the classic loop (14–21 days)
Picton (ferry from Wellington) → Nelson → Abel Tasman → Punakaiki → Franz Josef → Wanaka → Queenstown → Milford Sound → Te Anau → Dunedin → Christchurch → Kaikoura → Picton. Around 2,400 km. Book the Interislander ferry weeks in advance in summer. Best done in a mid-size or hi-top van for the long distances and alpine weather.
4. The West Coast + glaciers (7 days)
Christchurch → Arthur's Pass → Hokitika → Franz Josef → Fox → Wanaka → Christchurch via Lake Tekapo. About 1,200 km, one of the most scenic drives in the world. Petrol stations are far apart on the west coast — fuel up early.
5. Full North + South (4–6 weeks)
The "buy a van, do the whole country" trip. Combine the North Island loop with the South Island loop via the Interislander ferry (Wellington → Picton, ~3.5 hours). For trips this long, buying a van in Auckland and reselling before you fly out is almost always cheaper than renting — see the buy-a-campervan-in-NZ guide.
Realistic drive times
NZ roads look short on the map and drive slow in reality — winding, narrow, and often one-lane bridged. Plan around 60 km/h average outside motorways. A 300 km day is a big day in a campervan; 200 km leaves time for stops, photos and campground admin.
Van picked, itinerary next
Choose the right size for the trip you're planning — smaller vans for coastal loops, mid-size for a mixed North Island week, hi-top for a full South Island month.
